Xiaomi plans its own processor and operating system this year

The smartphone world is currently divided between iOS (Apple's) and Android (everyone else's) operating systems. But Xiaomi could change this very soon. Several rumors indicate that the Chinese company is developing an original operating system and processor.

As an alternative to the Android currently used by Xiaomi devices, the new OS could also be used in smartwatches and tablets. If confirmed, there is a possibility that the novelty could be announced later this year.

Will miOS be coming?

Among the many rumors on the subject, one generally reliable channel stands out. The DCS channel posted on the Chinese social network Weibo that by the end of the year Xiaomi should announce its new operating system, its new processor and details of its future electric car.

The company has also recently acquired the domain "mios.cn", as can be seen in the post below on the X social network. Theories so far point to this being an indication that the name of the new operating system will be miOS.

Why does Xiaomi want its own operating system?

It is quite possible that the main reason for Xioami to develop its own operating system is Chinese law. In China, the regulations are different from the rest of the world, which means that Google's services do not work in the same way.

For this reason, the operating system used by Xiaomi was already an open source version of Android, MIUI. Even so, Google still has a lot of power over it. And it has become really difficult to use an Android OS without Google services. Having an operating system of its own seems like a good way out of this situation.

Another strong motivation would be the integration between new Xiaomi products. It seems that the company will soon announce its own electric car. And it is essential for them to have a good compatibility between the vehicle and the different devices, not affected by the limits that Chinese regulations impose on Android.

Although there are already many rumors around the subject, it is important to note that the information has not been confirmed by Xiaomi. It is also worth remembering that, in early August, Xiaomi confirmed that the MIUI 15 operating system, based on Android 14.0, should arrive by the end of the year.
