X launches post monetization for Brazilian users

In July of this year, the social network X, formerly Twitter, launched the possibility of monetizing publications. With this feature, based on the number of views of their posts, X Premium users can charge for their content.

This week, X announced that this monetization, which was initially available in the United States, has now also been launched for Brazilian content creators.

X offers two forms of monetization. The first is through subscriptions, in which the content producer can charge for allowing other users to "subscribe" to their account to consume monthly content. The second is the distribution of advertising revenue. Here, the creator gets part of the profits from the ads that are published among the responses to their posts.

To qualify for both, you must:

  • Have an X Premium subscription
  • Have more than 500 followers
  • Have 5 million organic impressions (i.e. without boosting posts)
  • Never having violated the conditions of use
  • Being over 18 years

The subscription page is located at the following path: X main menu > More > Monetization.

In the United States, X continues to require users to open an account with the financial service Stripe in order to receive payments through it. It is not yet clear whether payments in Brazil will also be made through Stripe.

In the US, X has also taken into account impression (view) history since February, when the feature was announced. Retroactively, there are records of users who have received up to $40,000. It has not yet been revealed whether Brazilian content producers will also receive retroactive payments.

Payments have already been problematic in the United States

According to X, monetization payments are made regularly from the moment the creator has generated more than US$10. And the potential large numbers soon attracted the interest of more users to join the feature. This was even one of X's justifications for the problem the monetization service had in August.

Less than a month after the service began, the platform was unable to pay users. According to the X support account, the huge popularity of monetization was greater than anticipated. "Update August 4, 2023: The volume of people who have signed up for benefit sharing has exceeded our expectations. We previously said that payments would take place in the week of July 31. We need a little more time to review everything to next payment and we hope to have paid all eligible accounts as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience," the account posted.

At the time, X's new owner, Elon Musk, also spoke out and promised big payouts.

"Content creators' interest in ad revenue sharing has far exceeded our expectations, so it will take a few more days to process. Big payouts coming soon."
