The WordPad text editor will soon disappear from Windows. Microsoft has announced that the program will no longer be updated and will not be present in the next version of the operating system.
The company recommends users to use Microsoft Word for editing .doc and .rft files, and Windows Notepad for .txt documents.
WordPad was released with Windows 95 to replace the then text-editing application, Microsoft Write. .rtf, one of the main formats for which the application was created, basically fell into disuse in recent years, making the program obsolete.
Neither Word nor Notepad
WordPad is often criticized for not being as light and simple as Notepad, nor as complete and sophisticated as Word. Although it contains the main text editing functions, it does not offer basic tools such as a spell checker, footnotes, a thesaurus and much more.
Interestingly, the news comes a day after the announcement of an update to the Notepad program. The new version saves content automatically and allows users to pick up where they left off when they close and open a file.
WordPad isn't the only Windows program discontinued by Microsoft this year. Windows 11 recently lost the Cortana virtual assistant, which had already been removed from Xbox consoles and Android and iOS devices.
