It took a while, but it's here! Three months after Meta announced WhatsApp Channels and made the new feature only available in some countries, the new tool goes live in 150 countries today, September 13.
As Mark Zuckerberg announced today, the channels will be available in more than 150 countries.
If the new tool hasn't appeared for you yet, don't worry. The update is rolling out gradually, and WhatsApp has announced that the new feature will arrive for iOS and Android in the coming weeks. But several people are already choosing which channels to follow in the messaging app.
But what are WhatsApp channels?
Like what we already have on Instagram, WhatsApp channels are a space where only their administrators can send messages and updates on relevant topics. This is a mass communication feature so that participants can receive content directly on WhatsApp.
Although participants cannot respond with messages, they can react to news or other posts from administrators and share them in other groups or conversations among their contacts.
Major media outlets around the world already have their own WhatsApp channels to share news. Artists and celebrities have also created their own spaces on Instagram and WhatsApp to share news about their careers, releases and performance dates.
Ok, how do I follow a WhatsApp channel?
If the new feature is already available in your app, the way to follow new channels is as follows:
- Click on the new "Updates" tab
- In the new window, go to the bottom, where the channels are. If you want to search for a specific channel, click on "Search for channels".
- In the new window, WhatsApp will suggest several channels, but you can search by clicking on the magnifying glass at the top right.
- When you have chosen a channel, click the "Follow" button.
- If you wish, you can also activate notifications for each channel. Simply click on the bell/notification symbol that appears at the top right of each channel.
Otherwise, the channels should not "bother" you with notifications and you can always check the news from each channel by going to the Updates tab.
