It is possible that future Apple Watch models may be able to change its dial automatically to adapt it to the user's clothing or the watch strap.
The information should be considered a rumor until confirmed by the company. However, the news reached the public via the Apple Insider page, which presented an important clue about Apple's plans for the next update of its smartwatches.
Apple has filed a patent for a "color sensor".
According to information on the Apple Insider page, the company was granted a patent this week titled "Electronic devices with color sampling sensors." The devices have been described as light sensors that should go underneath the Apple Watch display and are capable of measuring the color of external objects.
The patent also details how this sensor should work. According to the document, the new device should be able to emit a sequence of red, green and blue light towards an external object. From there, it could collect color samples with a proximity sensor, optical sensor, ambient light sensor or other type of sensor that should measure RGB reflection levels.
The next steps would be performed by specific algorithms to match the background of the display to the color of the captured user's wristband or clothing.
Apple is testing other "mind-blowing" features for the Apple Watch
The new watch face color matching feature is likely to take some time to reach in-store models. In general, it takes a while to develop a product from the time a patent is granted. However, Apple has already commented that users of its smartwatch can expect great new features in the future.
Back in 2020, CEO Tim Cook revealed that the company was testing "mind-blowing" features for the Apple Watch. At the time, the CEO said that Apple was only "at the beginning" of what the watch could become. In February of this year, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman revealed that Apple was moving forward with research into non-invasive blood glucose monitoring technology. Such a feature would be very welcome for people with diabetes, for example, who would be able to perform this measurement without needles.
While these and other great features are likely to take a few years to reach the market, the Apple Watch already offers other useful health monitoring features. These include heart rate notifications, blood oxygen measurement, fall detection, heart rate monitoring, sleep monitoring and sports apps.
