The 1st humanoid robot capable of flying airplanes is ready (Video)

South Korea has taken another important step in robotics research and has developed the first humanoid robot in history capable of flying airplanes. Named PIBOT (Pilot + Robot), the robot has been created by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).

PIBOT is capable of learning to fly any aircraft.

In a video published by Euronews Next (above), we can see the robot in action. PIBOT has been developed to be able to learn all the piloting procedures of any aircraft. To do this, the robot uses Artificial Intelligence technology, such as ChatGPT, to understand and memorize aviation manuals.

The automaton has a camera as "eyes" through which it can see the different cockpits to understand how to use them. It also has the ability to understand human speech and respond with a synthetic voice, which is essential for it to communicate with air traffic crews and other pilots.

In a press release, the team behind the innovation said PIBOT can fly planes even in heavy turbulence. In case of emergency, it can react much faster than human pilots, according to its developers, without any emotional interference.

Another advantage of the robot is that it has been designed to adapt to different types and sizes of cockpit. At 1.60 m and 65 kg, it can pilot any aircraft without the need to adapt the vehicle physically or in terms of software.

PIBOT can now be applied to automated flights.

According to David Hyunchul Shim, head of research at KAIST, humanoid pilots are ready and can be applied to automated flights immediately.

The Institute's press release also mentions that plans for the future of this technology aim to bring PIBOT to other vehicles, such as cars or ships. One of the sectors in which the robot could be useful is the military, where it could be used to pilot unmanned vehicles.
