Netflix announced Monday that it is conducting a limited beta test of a cloud gaming technology it is developing. Initially, only a small number of invited subscribers in Canada and the U.K. will be able to play and stream their games through Netflix on TVs, PCs and Macs.
The news comes with a positive welcome for those who have enjoyed Netflix games since 2021, when the platform expanded into this market. But it's not exactly a surprise. That's because, just last week, Netflix launched a virtual controller app for iPhone and iPad, the Netflix Game Controller, leaving gamers to wait for more news soon.
"Our goal has always been to have a game for everyone."
In its announcement, Netflix detailed that two games will be available for beta testing on the game streaming service. The games are Molehew's Mining Adventure, a gem mining arcade game; and the graphic adventure game Oxenfree. Those participating in the test on a Mac or PC will be able to use a keyboard and mouse to play. Gamers who want to test on a TV, on the other hand, need to download the Netflix Game Controller app.
In a blog post, Netflix vice president of gaming Mike Verdu said the company has been focused on creating a great gaming experience since 2021, when it added mobile gaming. "Our goal has always been to have gaming for everyone, and we're working hard to serve members with an accessible, seamless and ubiquitous service. Today, we're taking the first step toward making games playable on all the devices our subscribers enjoy Netflix on - TVs, computers and mobile devices," Verdu said.
With the beta test, Netflix will be able to see, prior to a worldwide launch, the performance and possible improvement needs of its new game streaming technology and game control app. Initially, only a few TVs will be able to stream games to mobile devices. Check the list below:
- Amazon Fire TV streaming media players
- Chromecast with Google TV

- Roku TVs and devices

- Walmart ONN
Ever-expanding service
Since Netflix began offering mobile games as part of its subscription in November 2021, the company has already greatly expanded its catalog of games. And the investment it is making in this market is huge. Proof of this is that Netflix has acquired some of the studios behind the games it offers. This is the case of Night School Studio, developer of Oxenfree; and Boss Fight Entertainment, developer of Dungeon Boss: Respawned.
The Netflix Game Controller app is also an important and long-awaited step in the expansion of the streaming game service. The app pairs devices with the TV and allows users to play games on the platform using their phone or tablet.
With the announcement of beta testing of cloud gaming, Netflix appears to be getting closer and closer to launching itself as a major competitor in this market.
