Why removing features could be good for Edge

Edge has had the same Chromium engine as Chrome since 2020, as a first step to compete with Chrome and offer a similar search experience. The next step to stand out was to offer differentiating features. To do this, Microsoft added a large number of unique features. But the plan backfired.

Some features were positive additions, but others were not even used by Edge users, did not attract new fans and even "bloated" the browser. Therefore, to eliminate this overload, Microsoft's new move was to remove some of these features.

The chosen ones were: Math Solver, Picture Dictionary, Quotes, Grammar Tools and Kids Mode. In the announcement made to Beta Channel subscribers, Microsoft explained that the decision was intended to "improve the end-user experience and simplify the More Tools menu."

When Edge 117 will be released

Currently only available to beta testers, the official release of Edge 117 is scheduled for September 14, 2023.

It's worth noting that while Microsoft has removed features, it will also be adding new ones to Edge. Still, the developer has already announced its intention to simplify the browser. Therefore, it is expected to focus its efforts on improving Edge's performance and user experience.
