Since 2021, different Apple release sources have reported that the company is interested in exploring the concept of a larger iPad. Now, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that a 14-inch iPad was on the verge of hitting the market this year.
The transition to OLED displays would have discouraged a larger iPad.
According to Gurman, the reason Apple gave up on launching a 14-inch iPad was the transition to OLED displays. The new technology offers better image quality, reduced black borders around the screen and the ability to produce transparent and flexible displays. However, the higher costs of OLED appear to have discouraged the launch of larger screens for iPads.
Gurman was one of the first people to report Apple's possible interest in launching iPads with larger screens, which could even reach or exceed the size of some of the brand's laptops. Currently, the iPad Pro has the largest models available, at 11 inches and 12.9 inches. But this still lags behind the smaller MacBooks, such as the MacBook Air M1 and MacBook Pro M2, with 13.3-inch screens.
However, this could change in the future. The idea of a larger iPad has not yet been ruled out. Over the past two years, rumors have already pointed to the possibility of 14-inch, 15-inch and even 16-inch models. So far, leaked information suggests that we should receive new 13-inch iPad models in the first half of 2024, making the device very similar in size to the 13.3-inch MacBook.
Apple recently confirmed that its annual launch event will be held on September 12. The Apple Special Event will be marked by the official announcement of the iPhone 15 and the new Apple Watch. The company is also expected to launch iOS 17, watchOS 10 and tvOS 17.
