Sony released a new (and big) update to PlayStation 5 yesterday. The implementation of Dolby Atmos compatible audio, the ability to mute the annoying startup beep, support for an assistant controller and a few other new features should please fans of the console.
The update's release comes just over a month after the developer began beta testing. And an expansion of the PS Remote Play app accompanied the newly released features.
Dolby Atmos support
Most games these days are betting not only on an increasingly realistic visual experience, but also on a sound experience, with some games featuring soundtracks worthy of cinematic productions. And if this is the case, the sound support should also be of a similar quality.
With this in mind, the new PS5 update brings Dolby Atmos support for a 3D audio implementation from Sony (Tempest 3D AudioTech). The new feature supports Dolby Atmos devices such as speakers, TVs and home theater systems.
In addition, media platforms such as Netflix will also be able to update their PS5 apps to support Dolby Atmos audio.
Beep mute option
The new update has brought the change that so many gamers were asking for: the option to mute the beep that the PS5 emits when you turn the console on or off, or when it goes into sleep mode.
If you don't want to turn off the beep completely, you also have the option to adjust its volume. A simple update, but one that should please many console users.
Changes in group dynamics and with vites
Another welcome change: the ability to invite players to a closed group without having to add them to the group. In addition, the new update also allows players to send invitations to open and closed groups to several people at the same time.
Another new feature that should please PS5 users is the sharing screen preview. Is someone inviting you to a group? Now, before you decide whether to join the group, you can preview the inviting party's screen and even see which friends are there.
Better storage support
Want more space? The new update has improved its support for expandable M.2 SSD storage up to a limit of 8TB on drives.
Sony has explained that it will still be necessary to have an M.2 SSD that meets the minimum requirements, but the change has brought more options to PS5 users who needed more storage.
Second support check
Probably one of the most useful and fun additions to this PS5 update: a second controller to help friends or family in games. And we're not talking about a second player to play a game together. DualSense for Support lets you assign a second controller to an account as an auxiliary controller. From there, you can use two controllers to operate the PS5 console as if you were using a single controller.
Hideaki Nishino, senior vice president of platform experience at Sony Interactive Entertainment, explained in a statement the various times when the feature can be useful: "This feature presents a new way to enjoy games in collaboration with others or to help a friend or child navigate a particularly difficult section of a game."
User interface improvements
On the user interface side, improvements include general changes to navigation and touch response. With the software update, the player will be able to move the focus from one section to another to activate tactile sensation, along with tactile feedback when reaching the end of a "scrollable" section.
In addition, the user will be able to activate tactile feedback from a DualSense controller while navigating the PS5 user interface.
Voice Command Enhancements
Voice commands were another area where the update brought improvements. Now, players can use the command "Hey, PlayStation, help" to search for support pages. The phrase "Hey, PlayStation, what's new?" will show new PS5 features in updates like this one.
PS Remote Play support has been expanded.
PS Remote Play support has been expanded to include additional Android TV devices. The PS Remote Play app is now available on Android TV OS 12 devices such as Chromecast with Google TV (4K) and Sony's Bravia XR A95L. With this feature, gamers can stream games from a PS5 or PS4 to Android TV OS 12 devices.
